You can buy Pygora fiber in many different forms in today's market whether it be a fiber fair or an online website. Pygora fiber is considered a luxury fiber because it is a very fine, soft fiber. It has been compared to cashmere and quiviut in feel. Pygora fiber typically costs more than other fibers for numerous reasons, but the two main reasons being: amount of fleece produced on each goat per year and guard hairs. Some Pygora goats are sheared twice per year (type A fleeces), while the rest are sheared once per year (type B and C fleeces). A typical type A-fleeced goat (similar to kid mohair) will produce approx 2+ lbs of fleece per year. A type B-fleeced goat (no other fiber compares) produces approximately 8-10 oz per year, and a type C-fleeced goat (similar to cashmere) produces slightly less per year. All Pygora fiber has guard hairs, some are more silky and barely noticeable, while others are coarse and must be removed before spinning (the best method is commercial dehairing).
Please don't purchase a raw Pygora fleece unless you plan to have it commerically dehaired, or if you enjoy hand combing your fiber, which is an extremely slow process. We don't sell raw Pygora fiber, for this very reason. We want to sell spinners a quality product, not something that will make "hairball yarn". All of our Pygora fiber for sale has been dehaired.
How much Pygora fiber do I need for a project? This depends, of course, on how you spin the fiber. I've spun a 2 ply sportweight yarn and made a pair of fingerless gloves that weigh 1.4 oz when finished. Most people don't realize how far Pygora fiber goes once it's spun into yarn! We've made hats, scarves, and the gloves all with less than 2 oz of our Pygora/Merino (or Cormo) blends. And you won't lose that Pygora halo and luster with the wool blends! Pygora yarn will bloom and halo a nice amount - yet not overly too much.
Is Pygora fiber ok for a beginner spinner? We believe that decision is entirely up to the individual! Remember - no spinning police here!! Seriously - everyone is different and it's really up to you. You may wish to practice your new skills on a fiber that costs a bit less. Pygora and Pygora blends are not difficult to spin.
